What the Bible says
Solomon asks for the whole heart, and he sets trust against leaning on our own understanding. The promise follows: “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:6). We do not need to see the whole road. We need to know the One who leads us on it, and to bring every part of life to Him rather than keeping some of it back for ourselves.
Jeremiah sets two lives side by side. “Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm” (Jeremiah 17:5), for he is like dry heath in the desert. But “Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is” (Jeremiah 17:7). He is like a tree by the river that does not fear the heat. David said the same: “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God” (Psalm 20:7).
Trust is not the absence of fear but what we do with it. David wrote, “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee” (Psalm 56:3). Isaiah promises, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee” (Isaiah 26:3). And the psalmist invites us, “Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him” (Psalm 62:8). Trusting God and praying to Him belong together.
We trust God because of who He is and what He has said. Abraham “staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief” (Romans 4:20), fully persuaded that God was able to do what He had promised. That same God gave His Son for sinners, and “they that know thy name will put their trust in thee” (Psalm 9:10). The more we know Him in Christ, the more we find that He is worthy of all our trust.
