What the Bible says
The deepest peace is peace with God. Christ made “peace through the blood of his cross” (Colossians 1:20), for “the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5). So “being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1). Peace is not first a feeling we reach for but a Person we receive: “For he is our peace” (Ephesians 2:14).
From peace with God flows the peace of God. “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6–7). Prayer with thanksgiving is the path, and God Himself stands guard over the heart.
Peace is tied to where the mind rests. “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee” (Isaiah 26:3). “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace” (Romans 8:6). So we are told, “let the peace of God rule in your hearts” (Colossians 3:15), and at night we can say, “I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep” (Psalm 4:8).
Christ’s peace holds even in trouble. “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). His name is “The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6), and His people pray, “Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means” (2 Thessalonians 3:16).
