How to Be Saved: Bible Verses About Salvation

The jailer at Philippi asked the most important question anyone can ask: “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” The answer was plain: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:30–31).

What the Bible says

Scripture begins with our need. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23), and “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way” (Isaiah 53:6). The result is serious: “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). No one can wash this away by good deeds, for God saves “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy” (Titus 3:5).

But God has done what we could not. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). The gospel is “that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3–4). He bore our sin so that we might be made righteous in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Salvation is a gift received by faith. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8–9). “If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Romans 10:9). Peter said, “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out” (Acts 3:19).

There is only one way, and it is open to all. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6), and the apostles preached, “Neither is there salvation in any other” (Acts 4:12). Yet the door is open to every sinner: “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13). “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2).
