The story
The LORD appeared to Abraham in the plains of Mamre as he sat in his tent door in the heat of the day (Genesis 18:1). He saw three men, and he ran to meet them and bowed down (Genesis 18:2). He hurried to Sarah and said, “Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth” (Genesis 18:6).
Abraham ran to the herd for a tender calf, and he set butter, milk and the meat before his guests (Genesis 18:7–8). Then the LORD said, “Sarah thy wife shall have a son.” Sarah was listening at the tent door. She and Abraham were old, so she laughed within herself (Genesis 18:10–12). The LORD asked, “Is any thing too hard for the LORD?” (Genesis 18:14). Sarah was afraid and said she had not laughed, but she had (Genesis 18:15).
Read it in the Bible: Genesis 18:1–15 (KJV)
1And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day; 2And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground, 3And said, My LORD, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant: 4Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree: 5And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall pass on: for therefore are ye come to your servant. And they said, So do, as thou hast said. 6And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth. 7And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetcht a calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he hasted to dress it. 8And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat. 9And they said unto him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent. 10And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him. 11Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. 12Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also? 13And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old? 14Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son. 15Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.

A 45-minute lesson plan
| 5 min | Welcome and pray. Greet each child by name and pray: Ask God to help us welcome others kindly and trust Him with things that seem too hard. |
|---|---|
| 10 min | The story. Play the story film: each verse appears on screen in the King James Version while the scene plays. Pause to ask what happens next. |
| 10 min | Talk about it. Ask the three questions below. Then ask: “Nothing is too hard for the LORD.” What does that mean for us? |
| 5 min | Memory verse. Say Luke 1:37 together, covering one word at a time until the children can say it alone. |
| 10 min | Activity. Younger children color the coloring page while you retell the story; older children do the class sheet (memory-verse fill-in, word search and questions). |
| 5 min | Pray and send home. Pray together and send the sheet home so families can talk about the first question this week. |
- Preschool: keep it short and physical. Act out the story, use a simple prop, and repeat the big idea in one sentence.
- Elementary: let children find the passage in their own Bibles. Ask “who, what, where” questions first, then “why.”
- Preteens: read the verses before and after the passage, and ask how this story fits the whole story of the Bible.
