The story
King Herod troubled the church and had James, the brother of John, put to death (Acts 12:1–2). Then he put Peter in prison, guarded by four groups of four soldiers (Acts 12:3–4). But “prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him” (Acts 12:5). That night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains (Acts 12:6).
Suddenly the angel of the Lord came, and a light shined in the prison. He struck Peter’s side and said, “Arise up quickly.” And the chains fell off his hands (Acts 12:7). The iron gate to the city opened by itself (Acts 12:10). Peter went to a house where many were praying and knocked (Acts 12:12–13). Rhoda was so glad at his voice that she ran to tell the others without opening the gate (Acts 12:14). When they opened it, they were astonished (Acts 12:16).
Read it in the Bible: Acts 12:1–19 (KJV)
1Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church. 2And he killed James the brother of John with the sword. 3And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.) 4And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people. 5Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him. 6And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison. 7And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands. 8And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me. 9And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision. 10When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him. 11And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews. 12And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying. 13And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda. 14And when she knew Peter’s voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate. 15And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel. 16But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished. 17But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place. 18Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter. 19And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judaea to Caesarea, and there abode.

What this story teaches
- God hears and answers when His people pray together (Acts 12:5, 7).
- No chains or gates can stop God’s plans (Acts 12:7, 10).
- The Lord sends His angels to help His people (Acts 12:11).
- We should keep praying, even when things look hopeless (Acts 12:5).
- God sometimes answers prayer in ways that surprise us (Acts 12:15–16).
Jesus Sets Us Free
Peter was chained in prison until God set him free. Sin holds us like chains, but Jesus makes us truly free.
John 8:36
A 45-minute lesson plan
| 5 min | Welcome and pray. Greet each child by name and pray: Pray for someone in a hard place. |
|---|---|
| 10 min | The story. Play the story film: each verse appears on screen in the King James Version while the scene plays. Pause to ask what happens next. |
| 10 min | Talk about it. Ask the three questions below. Then ask: “God hears His people when they pray together.” What does that mean for us? |
| 5 min | Memory verse. Say Acts 12:5 together, covering one word at a time until the children can say it alone. |
| 10 min | Activity. Younger children color the coloring page while you retell the story; older children do the class sheet (memory-verse fill-in, word search and questions). |
| 5 min | Pray and send home. Pray together and send the sheet home so families can talk about the first question this week. |
- Preschool: keep it short and physical. Act out the story, use a simple prop, and repeat the big idea in one sentence.
- Elementary: let children find the passage in their own Bibles. Ask “who, what, where” questions first, then “why.”
- Preteens: read the verses before and after the passage, and ask how this story fits the whole story of the Bible.

Chains Fall Off
You need: Paper chains, taped loosely around each child’s wrists
- Kids “sleep” in the prison with their paper chains on.
- A leader, the angel, taps each one and whispers, “Arise up quickly!”
- They break their chains and run through the “gate” (two leaders holding arms up) to knock on the door of the house where the church is praying.
The church prayed without ceasing. The angel woke Peter, his chains fell off, and the iron gate opened by itself.

Prayer Board
You need: A whiteboard or corkboard, sticky notes
- Everyone writes prayer requests on sticky notes and puts them on the board.
- Each person takes one to pray for every day this week.
- Next week, move answered prayers to an “Answered!” column.
The church kept praying, and God answered so well that they could hardly believe it when Peter knocked.
